The Paper

Well....we got it done. It's probably not what they wanted...I don't know. They said we could do it like a story, sooo.... I do know that I helped her way too much -it became almost like dictation at one point-but I don't care. It is done, she's not going to fail because Third grade doesn't fail you for anything. In the future, I will have to do a better job of getting her to do research papers over the course of time, and not a few nights before it's due.

I did realize that I am so used to the way I do papers that for the first 2 months of having the assignment, I didn't even think about it. Then I get to the week or two before it's due and tell gwen "Ok do your paper!" and she says she doesn't know what to do and i say ok. Then my lovely sister pointed out that maybe Gwen doesn't do papers like we do and needs to do cluster bubbles and brainstorming and stuff.
My way is to sit down at the computer a day or so before the paper is due, and go at it. All research, all brainstorming and idea forming is done right there, in one sitting as I write the paper. And I get A's.
But not all people can do that, and I don't know if Gwen is one of those people. Either way, the teacher should have taught her how to do a research paper. When I was in school, the first research paper I did, the teacher walked us through step by step to teach us the process. Brainstorming, outlines, thought bubbles, note cards...the whole deal. Not here! They send home an assignment and expect us to just DO it.

Aack. Anyway...it's done. that's all that matters. Third graders shouldn't have to do research papers anyway.

Want to read it? Don't judge me....she really did think most of it up herself. I just said the whole "And then what do you think you would do in your day?" kind of stuff.

A Third Grader’s Life in the Early 1900’s in El Cajon
By, Gwendolynne Best

My name is Gwen. I am in third grade and I live in El Cajon, California. My school is El Cajon Grammar School. My school is on Magnolia Avenue. There are 20 kids in my class. My favorite subjects are science and arithmetic.
I wake up at about six o’clock in the morning. I help my mother by setting the table for breakfast. We eat a large breakfast of eggs, toast, and bacon. After breakfast, I help wash and dry the dishes. Then I go to my room to make my bed and get my dress on. Once I am dressed, my mother helps me braid my long beautiful hair, and she puts ruby red bows in my braided hair.
When I am all ready for school, my best friend Iman and I walk to school. After we get settled into the classroom, we study spelling and reading, followed by grammar and arithmetic. When we are finished with our work, we go outside for recess. At recess, Iman and I love playing kick the wickey. When we play kick the wickey, we take turns kicking a foot long stick and see if the other person can catch the stick.
After recess, we study science and social studies. I like science because we get to do experiments.
When school is over, Iman and I walk home and we play outside for a little while. Right after that, we have to do our homework and our chores. Some of my chores are washing the dishes, clearing the table after every meal, and making all of the beds.
When I have finished my chores, I eat dinner with my whole family. That night we ate meat, potatoes, crunchy carrots, and soft squishy bread. After dinner, I get in my night clothes and read for a while. Soon after, I lay down and my mother and father come in and turn out the light.

What's that, Mrs. Best? Did you say "House"?

Yes... yes I did!
The Bests will be putting in an offer on a house tonight! So, this is a call to prayer, my loyal blog followers! Please pray for God's will to be done...plain and simple.
If it is OUR house, then let our offer be accepted. If it is not, then let it not. Also please ask God for patience while we wait for approval, and that we wouldn't have any (or many) setbacks.
Thank you SOOOO much!

Now, a teeny bit of info on the house... 3 bedrooms, 1 bath. 986 sq ft, huge yard....hardwood floors and perfectly situated for expansion later. We are VERY excited. We hope we get it!!!
A sneak peek...

Blog Shout out and other stuff

To all those who are interested in reading some good blogging about our world and the issues Christians face, go here and here.
These blogs belong to a good friend of mine, and he has some fabulous insight.

Other stuff...

I haven't baby-proofed yet. My baby is starting to become mobile. I knew this day would come, and I knew I had about 16 months from the time I peed on that stick, and I didn't do it. And now it's getting to be too late! She's gonna choke on something if I don't get my patootie in gear!! OH NO! Anyone want to come over and have a baby proofing party? I will seriously buy you lunch if you help me! hehe I don't know where to start though, lemme tell ya! I've been living here 8 years, and we have accumulated a LOT of stuff! So, I really want to put everything in the front yard and put everything back one thing at a time and NOT bring in what we don't need. But since I can't really do that, I have to start in one place and go from there. Sigh.

My big daughter has a report due for school on April 24th. El Cajon history. Bleck. Have we started? No. Will we before April 23rd? Hopefully yes but probably not. Do we have any clue where to start? Nope. How does a third grader write a research paper anyway? I haven't done even a college research paper in years... is a third grade paper the same? I don't even know. Any thoughts? Jordan? All i know is I am not ready for her schooling to become more complex, because that means MY life becomes more complex. And I am NOT happy about that. Why can't she stay a little girl forever?

Something else I realized today... I HATE it when I buy clothes and they fit perfectly until I wash them. I HANG DRY everything, yet stuff still shrinks and gets misshapen. AARGH! it's just so frustrating! Cuz then have to decide if my brand new clothes should hang in my closet never worn, or go into a goodwill bag never worn. :( or if i have to suffer through wearing them. I have no idea how to prevent this, either.

Has anyone ever watched preschool age TV? It's all that's on during the day and Gwen's home so she's been watching it a little bit. One character on the show, Wonder Pets, has that stupid baby accent where she can't say her "R"'s and "L"'s - they come out as "W"'s. I LOATHE that stupid accent, and I feel like having it in the show says to children that it's ok to talk like that. And that bothers me.
Then there's multiple other shows where they show that undermining authority, asking over and over, throwing temper tantrums, etc will get you what you want. Lying is ok, saying things "louder" because dora (and many other shows) "can't hear you!" is infuriating! What happened to good values, like Mr Rogers?

And this is not even to mention the school age/teen shows that are on in the afternoon! No parents to be found, and if they are around, they're stupid oafs who are constantly outsmarted by children, who are the heroes. Teachers are evil or stupid, homework never gets done, boarding school is glamorous... etc. The attitudes these children have are heinous, and no matter what anyone says, they DO RUB OFF. My lovely 8 yr old daughter is proof. And when she isn't having a bad attitude, she's begging to watch TV...ALL THE TIME! It is her idol. She worships TV. She says she misses me, but then as soon as I'm available, she wants to watch TV. Instead of going outside, instead of eating ice cream, instead of everything.... and when the TV's on, she cannot hear ANYTHING. Armageddon could be going on and she wouldn't even bat an eyelash.
Oh I hate TV. All TV. And it doesn't get better when you're an adult, either. I think we'll be getting rid of it starting next billing cycle.

And it now occurs to me that I am writing this blog for probably no one. I am the girl who cried "blog". I started it and had many followers... then I failed to produce and now no one even checks. Shame on me. BUT I have vowed that 10 minutes a day is no big thing when it comes to sharing my thoughts with those who want to hear them! So ready everyone? Here we go!

And with that, pictures:

Yes...oh yes...

I am a picture stealer, Jordan! But my kid is too stinkin cute not to share.

Of course I didn't get any pics of Lucy in her Saturday night, Sunday morning, or Sunday night Easter adorableness...So I will have to wash the clothes and then recreate the cuteness this week. Cuz ohmagolly she was CAHYOOOTE!!!!
Gwen-a-licious was adorable this weekend too! We had a lot of fun together! Easter egg hunt pics to follow when Jordanna gets her bootie in gear and gives me the pics. :) Hee hee!!
My family has had a rift in it for the last few years, and last week it was repaired! Soooo we got to have Easter dinner together last night! It was so great! It reminded me of the days of yore, when we'd do exactly what we did last night, but it was never as good, because for years the rift had slowly been building. NOW... it is all gone! All has been forgiven and everyone was FREEEEEEEEE!!!! God is SO good!
In other news, My husband is a Superstar. He sang so wonderfully at church this weekend, I think he might become famous. Or maybe he already is. I am so in love with that man and I know you're all jealous of me getting to have him for my very own! Oh I am so SO proud to be Michael Best's wife!

WOOO HOOO! It is a good Monday! For whatever reason, I feel so happy, even though my body hurts and I only slept 2 hrs at a time last night! My hair is done, my face is done..my house is in the process of being cleaned, and my husband started his new position at the new office, which is CLOSER TO HOME! Which means I should be able to expect him home sooner!!!! it's a good day! And maybe, just maybe, we'll take a trip to the park today!
And maybe, just maybe...I'll REMEMBER MY CAMERA!

it's been less than a month!

In the last month, I have...

Gotten in more a of a groove as a mommy
Learned that I don't have to please everyone all the time
Learned that my husband has way fewer expectations of me than I have of myself, and that takes a load off.
Sold and delivered girl scout cookies
Decided to "gourmet it up" in the kitchen
Helped my sister pick out a wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses
Addressed Save-the-dates
Did Katy's taxes
Got a hair cut
Got my haircut fixed
Paid down our debt
Did probably 30 loads of laundry
Bought new clothes for the whole family
Spent less time watching tv and less time on the computer
Spent a TON of time baking (and eating the finished product)...good thing I'm breastfeeding!
Put off Gwen's school project...guess we should start on it now
Set up our external hard drive and backed everything up
Went to a baby shower with old work people. Realized I sorta miss it but not enough to shed any tears! I love being at home!!

hmmmm.... I'm sure I've done more... I'll have to think about it. But either way, God has been really good. He is taking such good care of our family, and He is teaching me so much! I am so happy!

Mikey is doing well in his job...they really love him there. And he has been promoted at church too! He is getting his own band on Saturday nights!
Gwen is doing great in school... they REALLY love her there!
Lucy is awesome. She is so stinkin cute! She can sit up now, and she can roll over and over!

Our family is wonderful and I am so enjoying every minute of it.

Gwen is on spring break right now and it is really fun. We've done some cleaning, some sittin on the grass relaxin, some tv watchin... We're going to hit up the park soon, and we have plenty or errands to run. We also want to go to a free museum next Tuesday at Balboa park! Any other suggestions what we could do?

Anyway...that's the short of it. :)

Here's some pics!
